Maguire’s Wines & Spirits has been in business since 1987. The store was originally opened in the Tarriffville section of Simsbury, after 7 successful years there, expansion was on the mind of owner Chris Maguire. After attempting to expand in Tarriffville, by moving to a larger venue or by purchasing the other store in the small neighborhood, he was contacted by the management company of the Drake Hill Mall in Simsbury center. The spot they had picked out was between Fitzgerald’s Food Store and Arrow Drugs. Along with those stores the mall had Bill Selig Jewelers, American Savings Bank, and Battison’s Dry Cleaners, along with a few other small shops. For Chris, who for years had a store that was not surrounded by other stores, this was ideal. After a few years the owners decided to scrap the inside mall concept and convert it to a strip mall setting. This gave Maguire’s not only more space but also more visibility to outside traffic.
In 1997 Maguire’s Wines hired it’s first full time manager, Geoff Hansen. Geoff's experience since 1988 had been as a chef in the restaurant business, where the right beverage can make all the difference in the meal that you are having. Between both he and the owner Chris they have over 35 years of experience dealing with beverage choices. In 2004 Maguire's has also hired a full time sales associate, Jason Cabral. Jason comes to us after having worked part time for 6 months or so and brings with him not just the “Maguire’s Wines” feel for great service, but also an enjoyment of wine and spirits knowledge that helps him fit right in with the stores needs. We feel that this makes for the ideal situation of knowledge and friendly service to help our customers choose a wine or a spirit to go with whatever situation may arise.
Growing into the largest store in town after starting out the smallest is great for buying power and selection, but contrary to many other expanding buisnesses Maguire’s has kept their great service a top proirity. Some of the convieniences of having Maguire’s help to organize a party for you is that after years of seeing this buisness from both sides not only do we know what you need, but you will never get stuck with merchandise you don’t want, because we will take back and credit things that you don’t use.
